DeFi token approval: a contract may spend up to the amount you sign

Before a swap or a deposit, a token contract often asks you to approve a spender. That signature allows the spender to move the token up to the amount you set. It is separate from the swap itself.

Read the spender

Check the spender address against the protocol’s own documentation, not against the first result in a search ad. An unlimited approval remains after you are done unless you revoke it or the allowance is spent. Revoke tools exist. Use one you have checked, on the right network.

Use case: you tried one swap and left. Open the wallet’s approval list a week later. Remove spenders you do not recognize and spenders for sites you will not use again. A later bug in a forgotten spender can move the approved token.

Questions

Does approving a token send it?

Not by itself. Approval grants permission. A later call from that spender can transfer up to the allowance.
