The Fed cut 100 bps in late 2024 and the 10-year yield rose about 80 bps anyway. Why a rate cut can tighten conditions, and the 4 gauges to check

Here is the contradiction that confuses a lot of traders every FOMC week: between September and December 2024 the Fed cut its target range from 5.25-5.50% to 4.25-4.50%, a full 100 basis points. Over the same stretch the 10-year Treasury yield went from 3.70% (Sep 18) to 4.50% (Dec 18), up roughly 80 basis points. Easier policy, tighter long-term money. MEXC Learn's new explainer walks through why.

The Fed sets overnight money, not the whole curve
The fed funds range is for overnight lending between banks. The 10-year yield is set by bond buyers and can be split into two parts:
- the average path of short-term rates the market expects over the next decade
- a term premium: extra pay for locking money up for ten years
The term premium tends to rise when inflation is harder to predict, growth looks stronger than expected, or investors want more compensation for duration risk. Expectations about government borrowing and Treasury supply may also play a role, though MEXC notes you can't cleanly isolate that without a formal term-premium model. A cut can lower the first part while the second part jumps.
Mechanism 1: valuations get discounted harder
The 10-year yield works as the risk-free base in valuing future cash flows. MEXC's example: $100 arriving in ten years is worth about $67.56 today at a 4% discount rate, and about $61.39 at 5%. Same forecast, roughly 9.1% less present value. Assets whose value depends on cash flows far in the future feel this the most.
Mechanism 2: debt gets more expensive to roll
A company that has to refinance while long yields stay high pays more interest, which eats future earnings. Two companies in the same sector can react completely differently depending on whether their debt is fixed for years or due next year.
Mechanism 3: gold cares about real yields, not the headline
Gold pays nothing, so what matters is the inflation-adjusted return you give up by holding it. Rough rule: real yield = nominal yield - expected inflation.
- Nominal 10-year goes from 4% to 5%, expected inflation from 2% to 4%: real yield actually falls from 2% to 1%. Less pressure on gold.
- Nominal rises while inflation expectations stay put: real yield rises. That is the harder case for gold.
A stronger dollar on top makes dollar-priced gold more expensive for everyone else.
The 4-gauge dashboard MEXC suggests
- 2-year Treasury yield: the market's view of the next few Fed meetings
- 10-year yield: the long view on growth, inflation and duration risk
- 10-year inflation-protected (TIPS) yield: real borrowing cost
- US Dollar Index: whether money keeps favouring dollar assets
If the 10-year nominal yield, the 10-year real yield and the dollar all rise after a cut, long-term conditions have not eased the way the headline suggests.
What would prove that view wrong
MEXC spells out the invalidation: if nominal and real 10-year yields fall on a sustained basis, the dollar does not strengthen, and earnings estimates hold steady, then long rates are no longer offsetting the cut, and lower discount rates have a firmer basis for supporting prices.
What this means on FOMC days
MEXC's piece is about stocks and gold and makes no crypto call. The practical takeaway for anyone trading leveraged positions around a rate decision is to read the reaction in the 2-year, the 10-year, real yields and the dollar, not the words "rate cut". A standard risk warning applies here: rate announcements can flip yields, stocks, currencies and gold quickly, and leveraged derivatives can be liquidated in those moves.
