[Current events - Fed week, ETH perp]

14.04 USDT. A 50x ETH long opened at KCEX's 4:20 PM ET mark has a rough liquidation price that far above today's 24h low. ETH does not need a crash after the Fed to close it. A repeat of Tuesday's range is enough.

What is happening. The Fed's two-day meeting began Tuesday with a decision on Wednesday, and FedWatch odds sat near 90% for no change. Bitcoin slipped under 80,000. CoinDesk's derivatives read showed ETH down about 1.1% over 24h while ETH open interest rose about 0.8%, with funding still positive. Across the market, futures volume rose 18% to 152B USD while liquidations fell 13% to 133M USD. Leverage is being added, not flushed. SOL fell 1.91% with its OI up 3.6%, AAVE dropped 3.6% with DeFi, and XRP rose about 1% on Ripple's trust bank approval.

The image is KCEX's live ETHUSDT perpetual page at about 4:20 PM ET: last 2,345.71, index 2,345.97, mark 2,345.86, funding +0.0094% with the 8:00 PM ET countdown, 24h high 2,356.36, low 2,296.63, 24h turnover 4.495B and open interest 15.418M USDT. ETH had bounced by then, and the page shows +1.19% on the day.

KCEX ETH_USDT contract facts (public API, 4:20 PM ET):

  • Contract size: 0.001 ETH, so 1 ETH = 1,000 contracts
  • Max leverage: 125x, base maintenance margin 0.5%, initial margin 0.8%
  • Fees: maker 0, taker 0.01%
  • Funding: 0.0094% per 8h, cap +/-2%, next settlement 8:00 PM ET
  • Open interest: 6,573,074 contracts = about 6,573 ETH

Liquidation table for a 1 ETH long at mark 2,345.86 (rough isolated: entry x (1 - 1/leverage + 0.5% MMR), fees ignored):

  • 10x | margin 234.59 | liq about 2,123.00 | below the 24h low
  • 25x | margin 93.83 | liq about 2,263.75 | below the 24h low
  • 50x | margin 46.92 | liq about 2,310.67 | 14.04 above the 24h low of 2,296.63
  • 100x | margin 23.46 | liq about 2,334.13 | only 11.73 (0.50%) under mark

Event mechanics, plain:

  • Mark to 24h low is 49.23, about 2.10%. The full 24h range is about 2.60% of the low
  • Positive funding with OI rising into a dip means longs are adding and paying to hold
  • If the decision or the press conference surprises, the side holding the most fresh leverage gets liquidated first. Those forced orders can extend the move

Holding costs for the 1 ETH long: about 0.22 USDT per funding settlement at 0.0094%, and about 0.47 USDT round trip at the 0.01% taker fee. Small next to the liquidation risk.

Takeaway: in Fed week on KCEX ETH, check your leverage against the 24h range before anything else.

Checking it yourself before you open

  1. Enter your size and leverage on the ETHUSDT perp and read the estimated liquidation price before confirming.
  2. Compare that price with the recent low. If liquidation sits inside the range price already traded today, normal swings can reach it.
  3. Lower leverage step by step and watch the liquidation price move further away.
  4. Size the position from your stop distance, then pick the lowest leverage that covers the margin.
  5. Place a stop that fires a market order well before liquidation.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing leverage from the slider instead of from the stop and risk amount.
  • Forgetting that liquidation uses mark price, which can move faster than you expect around news.
  • Adding margin to save a position near liquidation instead of cutting it.
  • Holding maximum leverage through a scheduled rate decision.

FAQ

Why is the liquidation so close at high leverage? Margin is a small slice of the position, so a small move against you uses it up.

Does isolated mode help? It limits the loss to that position's margin but doesn't move liquidation further away by itself.

Is rising open interest a warning? It means more leveraged positions are open, which can add fuel to a fast move either way.

What's a sensible alternative? Smaller size, lower leverage and a planned stop.
