Bitcoin went to nearly 85,000 and back to 81,000 in about a day, and both longs and shorts got liquidated. What actually happened inside the perps?

[Current events] Picture two traders on Wednesday. One opens a 50x BTC short at 82,000, sure the bounce is done. The other buys at 84,000 with 25x, sure the breakout is real. By Thursday afternoon both positions are gone, and BTC is roughly where it started.
That is close to what the tape did. CoinDesk reported that BTC squeezed shorts on the way to nearly 85,000 late Wednesday, then wiped out longs on the way back to about 81,800, a roughly 3,000 dollar round trip in under a day. By the US close on Thursday BTC was near 81,400, down 3.6% over 24 hours, as the Nasdaq fell 2.6%, oil jumped more than 3% on renewed Middle East strikes, and Treasury yields fell 15-20 basis points.
The image is BloFin's live BTCUSDT perpetual page this afternoon: last price, mark price, index price and the funding rate with its countdown sit in the header above the chart. The 1h chart shows the spike to about 85,000 late on the 21st and the slide through the 22nd. At capture (4:16 PM ET) it read last 81,346.3, mark 81,346.8, index 81,384.1, 24h high 84,806.7, low 80,892.0, funding +0.0181%.
== The liquidation numbers == CoinDesk, citing CoinGlass, put 24h liquidations at about 431 million dollars. Roughly 173 million hit shorts during the climb, then in the following 12 hours longs made up 210 million of the 222 million wiped out. The single biggest hit was an 11.8 million dollar BTC long on Binance closed near 83,500. Liqwall's cross-exchange count for the latest 24h window shows 125 million of BTC longs versus 3.3 million of shorts, so the window you look at decides which side looks "wrecked".
== Why the same move kills both sides == Liquidation is triggered when your margin minus losses falls below maintenance margin, and exchanges measure that loss against the mark price, not one print of the last price. The closer leverage pushes liquidation to entry, the smaller the move needed. A two-way swing of about 4.6% (BloFin's own 24h range was 84,806.7 high, 80,892 low) is enough to reach both ends of a high-leverage book.
Worked example (isolated margin, maintenance margin rate assumed at 0.5%, fees and funding ignored):
- 50x short at 82,000: liquidation = 82,000 x (1 + 1/50 - 0.005) = 82,000 x 1.015 = 83,230. The high above 84,800 passed it.
- 25x long at 84,000: liquidation = 84,000 x (1 - 1/25 + 0.005) = 84,000 x 0.965 = 81,060. The low near 80,900 passed it.
- 10x long at 84,000: liquidation = 84,000 x (1 - 0.1 + 0.005) = 76,020. Still open, sitting on a loss.
Same market, same day. The only difference was how much room each trader gave the trade.
== Funding did not flip, and that matters == Even after the long flush, funding stayed positive, meaning longs still pay shorts. Liqwall's cross-exchange average read +0.0067% per 8 hours this afternoon. BloFin's own BTCUSDT rate was 0.0181% per 8 hours at about 4:15 PM ET, with the next settlement at 8:00 PM ET. On a 10,000 USDT long that is about 1.81 USDT per period on BloFin versus about 0.67 at the cross-exchange average. Small per period, but it is a cost paid by the side that just got hurt, and it shows how much funding can differ between venues for the same coin.
== Open interest: which number are you reading? == Liqwall shows cross-exchange BTC open interest at 30.1 billion dollars, down 0.7% in 24h. Invezz, using a wider futures dataset, reported 53.66 billion and rising. Different data sets, different totals. What is useful is the direction alongside price: a drop with liquidations means positions were closed, while OI rising into a falling price means new positions are being opened into the move.
== What is on the calendar == None of this is a forecast, just the scheduled events that tend to move volatility and funding:
- Friday: about 1.23 billion dollars of BTC options expire, with max pain near 82,000 (Invezz). Max pain is not a target, only the price where option payouts would be smallest.
- October 30: the monthly expiry carries about 11.2 billion dollars of notional, with an implied one-standard-deviation range of about 78,300 to 87,100 (Invezz).
- Next week's Fed meeting: CME FedWatch odds of a hike had fallen to 8% Thursday morning from 28% a week earlier, per CoinDesk.
Altcoins swung harder than BTC on the same tape. CoinDesk had HYPE down 4.5%, DOGE nearly 4% and SOL 3% early Thursday, with ETH and XRP each down more than 5% by mid-afternoon.
