Splitting a 96 BTC order into 480 pieces: how BloFin's TWAP bot works and when it's the wrong tool

Hit market on a big order and you pay for it twice: once in fees and again in the levels you chew through on the way. Your average fill ends up worse than the price you clicked. BloFin Academy has a guide on the TWAP bot, which exists for exactly that problem.
The image is the official cover from that BloFin guide: a dark tablet with three glowing amber candles on a grid. No prices or account data.
The whole mechanism is two divisions
- number of sub-orders = total run time / interval
- size of each sub-order = total amount / number of sub-orders
BloFin's example: 96 BTC long over 4 hours, one order every 30 seconds. 14,400 seconds / 30 = 480 sub-orders, and 96 / 480 = 0.2 BTC each. Every 30 seconds the bot fires a 0.2 BTC market order. Shorter interval, more and smaller pieces: 5 seconds over an hour is 720 orders, 60 seconds over an hour is 60.
The settings you get
- Window: anywhere from 5 minutes to 24 hours (quick picks at 10m, 30m, 1h, 4h, 8h)
- Interval: 5 to 60 seconds; the guide suggests 15 to 30 for most cases
- Works on every BloFin perp, for opening or closing
- Reduce-only toggle (one-way mode) so an exit run can't flip you into the other side
Details that catch people
- Each slice is an IOC market order. If one doesn't fully fill, it retries once, then that slice is dropped and the bot waits for the next tick. Full execution isn't guaranteed.
- Nothing is reserved up front. Your balance stays free until each slice fires, so if the balance runs short mid-run, the bot stops and the rest never executes.
- It also stops if you switch position mode or the position hits a risk or open interest limit.
- No pause button. Stop cancels everything left; what already filled stays open.
- Limits: 50 running TWAPs per account, 5 per pair.
TWAP vs the alternatives, in one line each
- vs DCA: TWAP fills a size you already decided, on a clock. DCA adds only when price drops to set levels.
- vs a limit order: a limit gives you price certainty but maybe no fill. TWAP gives you the fill, at whatever the market is each tick.
- vs a scaled order: scaled orders sit on the book at different prices and wait. TWAP goes to the market on a timer.
When to skip it
If you need in right now, if the market is trending hard against your side (each slice fills worse than the last), or if your order is small enough that one market order barely moves the book, TWAP just adds time and complexity.
Grading the run afterwards
Order Center > Bots lists every slice with fill price, size and time. Work out your real average and compare it with what one market order would have paid. That tells you whether the window and interval were right for that pair.
