Bitunix ETHUSDT after the Binance reopen: volume up, open interest flat, and what mark vs last shows
Key takeaway
83%. That is how much ETH trading volume rose over 24 hours as Binance reopened withdrawals after its $6.3 billion hack, while ether open interest across the market stayed flat and price moved only 0.74%. Lots of contracts changed hands, and almost nobody added new exposure.

This post walks through how to read that kind of day on the Bitunix ETHUSDT perpetual, step by step, with live numbers.
The backdrop in three lines
Binance processed $4.65 billion of withdrawals against $1.01 billion of deposits after reopening, a net $3.64 billion outflow, and says it has covered around 95% of the stolen funds. Total crypto futures volume jumped 56% to $111.8 billion while open interest held near $137.1 billion. Liquidations rose 77% to $140.2 million. BTC showed the same pattern as ether: more volume, flat open interest, positive funding. NEAR led the losers, down 5.93%.
Step 1: Pull the four numbers that matter
From Bitunix public market data at 3:52 PM ET, Nov 2, for ETHUSDT:
- Last price 2,248.95
- Mark price 2,249.57
- Index price 2,250.13
- Funding +0.002775% per 8 hours
The rolling 24h range was 2,236.06 to 2,317.32, with the day opening at 2,262.45. Quote volume was about 1.18 billion USDT. The ticker feed does not publish an open interest figure, so for positioning we lean on the market-wide numbers above.
Step 2: Compare volume with positioning
Volume tells you activity. Open interest tells you commitment. When volume jumps and open interest stays flat, traders are mostly opening and closing against each other, or rotating out of one side into the other. Moves built on churn can fade quickly, because there is no fresh margin locked in behind them. That is a description of today, not a forecast.
Step 3: Read the funding
0.002775% per 8 hours is close to zero. Longs pay shorts, but barely. That fits the churn story. Nobody is crowding in aggressively enough to push the perp premium up.
Worked example, 5,000 USDT notional long:
- Per settlement: 5,000 x 0.00002775 = 0.139 USDT
- Per day, three settlements: about 0.42 USDT
On this pair right now, funding is a rounding error next to fees and price.
Step 4: Check mark versus last
Your unrealized PnL and liquidation run on mark, not last. Here last is 2,248.95 and mark is 2,249.57, a gap of 0.62 USDT per ETH.
Worked example, 2 ETH long:
- PnL difference between last and mark: 2 x 0.62 = 1.24 USDT
- Small today. On a fast hack-headline candle, last can spike well away from mark and the gap stops being small
The practical point: if a wick prints on last but mark does not follow, you were not liquidated by that wick. If mark follows, you were.
Step 5: Fit leverage to the day's range
Range: (2,317.32 - 2,236.06) / 2,236.06 = 3.63%.
- At 10x, margin covers roughly 10% of price, so a 3.63% swing uses about 36% of it
- At 25x, margin covers roughly 4%, so the day's range alone nearly wipes the cushion before maintenance is counted
- Bitunix lists up to 200x on this pair, where 0.5% covers the whole margin. The range is seven times that
Step 6: Decide what would change the read
Write down in advance what you are watching: a jump in funding, a clear rise in market-wide open interest, or a break outside the 2,236 to 2,317 range. If none of those happen, the churn read still stands.
Mistakes people made this weekend
- Treating high volume as a trend signal by itself
- Assuming flat open interest means nobody is trading
- Using last price to judge how close they were to liquidation
- Picking leverage from the max on the order panel instead of from the range
- Copying sentiment from BNB, where open interest fell 5.31%, or from DOGE and the memecoins, which lost about 1.9% as a group, onto ether, which behaved differently
FAQ
Does near-zero funding mean ETH is safe to long? No. It means holding a long costs little right now. Price risk is unchanged.
Why not just use Bitunix open interest? The ticker feed used here does not include it, so market-wide figures fill the gap. When you trade, check whatever the contract page shows.
Is the Binance outflow bearish for ETH? Money leaving one exchange is not the same as money leaving crypto. The futures data shows rotation more than exit for ether so far.
