DOGE funding cooled by more than half on KCEX as the Binance outflow played out

By Updated

Key takeaway

Picture the DOGE_USDT order book on KCEX at about 3:50 PM ET on Monday. Price is sitting near 0.0739, a little more than 3% under the day's high, while the rest of the market digests Binance reopening withdrawals after its $6.3 billion hack. Nothing dramatic on the chart.

The interesting part is the funding line, which quietly dropped by more than half since the morning.

The setup

After the hack, Binance restarted withdrawals in phases and reported a net $3.64 billion outflow. Futures volume across crypto jumped 56% to $111.8 billion, open interest stayed near $137.1 billion, and liquidations climbed 77% to $140.2 million. A memecoin index lost 1.9% on the day. $BTC.USDT and $ETH.USDT open interest were flat, which means the extra volume was mostly positions changing hands.

$DOGE.USDT is a good place to see how that shows up on a single contract.

The live numbers

KCEX public contract data, 3:53 PM ET, Nov 2:

  • Last 0.07387, fair price 0.07388, index 0.07391
  • 24h high 0.0763, low 0.07315, change -1.53%
  • Open interest 32,941,678 contracts. At 10 DOGE per contract that is about 329.4 million DOGE, or roughly 24.3 million USDT
  • 24h turnover about 135.1 million USDT
  • Max leverage 75x, maintenance margin rate 0.67%
  • Contract spec lists 0 maker and 0 taker fee on this pair

Funding history, newest first:

  • 11:00 AM ET Nov 2: 0.0100%
  • 3:00 AM ET Nov 2: 0.0100%
  • 7:00 PM ET Nov 1: 0.0036%
  • Current estimate for the 7:00 PM ET settlement: 0.0039%

What the funding drop means

Funding is the payment between longs and shorts that keeps the perp close to the index. Positive means longs pay. A move from 0.0100% down to 0.0039% means the long premium is fading. Longs are still paying, just less. That lines up with a memecoin group that is soft but not collapsing.

It does not tell you price will fall or rise. It tells you the cost of holding a long is falling and the crowding on the long side is easing.

Worked example

2,000 USDT notional long on DOGE_USDT:

  • At 0.0100%: 2,000 x 0.0001 = 0.20 USDT per settlement
  • At 0.0039%: 2,000 x 0.000039 = 0.078 USDT per settlement
  • Daily difference at three settlements: (0.20 - 0.078) x 3 = about 0.37 USDT

With zero trading fees on the pair, funding and price are the only running costs. Now compare with the range:

  • 24h range: (0.0763 - 0.07315) / 0.07315 = 4.31%
  • On 2,000 USDT, a range-sized move is about 86 USDT

So the funding change is worth about 0.37 USDT a day, and an ordinary day's swing is worth about 86 USDT. Both matter, but not equally.

Turnover versus open interest

24h turnover of 135.1 million USDT against open interest of 24.3 million USDT is about 5.6 times. The whole open interest traded over more than five times in one day. That is the churn picture from the wider market showing up on one contract: plenty of in-and-out, not much new money parked.

Leverage check

  • At 10x, margin covers about 10% minus the 0.67% maintenance, roughly 9.3%. The 4.31% range uses less than half
  • At 20x, the cushion is about 4.3%, almost exactly the day's range
  • At 75x, the cushion is well under 1%, and a single 15-minute candle can be enough

Mistakes to avoid

  • Reading a falling funding rate as a short signal. It is a cost change
  • Ignoring the settlement time. Funding is paid only by positions open at the settlement
  • Thinking zero trading fees make high leverage cheap. Fees are not what liquidates you
  • Using last price for liquidation math. KCEX shows a separate fair price for that

Short FAQ

Why look at DOGE on a Binance hack day? Memecoins tend to react first when risk appetite shifts, so they show the mood clearly.

Is 0.0039% high or low? Low and positive. The cap on this contract is plus or minus 2%, so 0.0039% is tiny next to it.

Does a 5.6 times turnover ratio mean the market is unstable? It means positions are short-lived. Add a fast headline, like the $BNB.USDT open interest drop or the Thorchain freeze debate around $RUNE.USDT, and moves can extend quickly in either direction.

Bottom line: on DOGE today, funding is cooling, turnover is high, and positioning is light. Size for the range, not for the headline.
