[Current events - Fed week, XRP perp]

Picture two traders opening Bitunix this morning. One sees Bitcoin under 80,000 ahead of the Fed and goes short everything. The other notices XRP is green and goes long XRP. By the afternoon both are paying or receiving funding, and only one of them checked which way it flows.

Why XRP is different today. CoinDesk's live coverage had XRP up about 1% early Tuesday after Ripple won a final go-ahead to launch its own US national trust bank, while BTC, ETH and SOL drifted lower. ZEC also edged up 0.5%, per CoinDesk. Meanwhile the Fed's two-day meeting began, with a hold widely expected on Wednesday. A coin with its own story can decouple from the macro tape for a while. Funding is where you see whether that move is being chased with leverage.

The image is Bitunix's live XRPUSDT perpetual page at about 4:20 PM ET: last 1.3229, 24h change +2.27%, mark 1.3232, index 1.3235, 24h high 1.3285, low 1.2845, volume 52.62M XRP / 68.86M USDT, funding 0.0150% with the 8:00 PM ET countdown.

Before the settlement (now):

  • Funding is 0.0150% per 8h on the public API, positive, so longs pay shorts at 8:00 PM ET
  • Bitunix caps XRP funding at +/-0.375% per 8h, so today's print is far from the limit
  • Mark 1.3232 sits just under index 1.3235, so the perp is not running hot versus spot right now
  • Max leverage on XRPUSDT is 100x

After the settlement, what changes:

  • The long pays notional x rate once. Example: 10,000 XRP at mark 1.3232 = 13,232 USDT notional, x 0.015% = about 1.98 USDT
  • Hold through 8 PM, 4 AM and 12 PM ET and that is about 5.95 USDT before Wednesday afternoon, if the rate holds
  • If the Fed outcome flips sentiment, the rate can fall or turn negative and the payer side switches

Where liquidations sit versus today's range:

  • Mark to the 1.2845 low is 0.0387, about 2.92%. Rough isolated long liquidation (entry x (1 - 1/leverage)): 20x about 1.2570, 50x about 1.2967. 50x sits above today's low, so a full range retrace closes it
  • Mark to the 1.3285 high is only 0.40%. A 50x short has a rough liquidation near 1.3497, above the high, but there is much less room on that side if XRP tags the high again

Quick FAQ

  • Does positive funding mean price goes up? No. It means longs are paying to stay in.
  • Is the trust bank news priced in? Funding cannot tell you. It only shows how crowded each side is.
  • What should I check after the Fed? The next funding print and whether XRP's range widens relative to BTC.

Reading funding step by step

  1. Open the XRPUSDT perp and find the funding rate and the countdown to the next settlement.
  2. Note the sign. Positive means longs pay shorts, negative means shorts pay longs.
  3. Check the interval. Funding is charged per settlement, so a holding period that crosses several settlements pays several times.
  4. Multiply your position value by the rate to get the payment for one settlement. Position value, not margin.
  5. Compare the mark price with the last traded price. Funding exists to pull the perp back toward the index, and a wide gap tells you which side is crowded.
  6. Do the same check on BTCUSDT. When one coin trends against the market, its funding can point the opposite way from BTC.

Common mistakes

  • Thinking funding is a fee paid to the exchange. It moves between traders.
  • Ignoring funding on a high-leverage position. A small rate on a large notional adds up quickly.
  • Closing just after settlement and assuming you dodged it. You only avoid a payment if you're flat at the settlement time.
  • Reading one print as a trend. Rates change every interval, so watch a few in a row.

FAQ

Why would XRP funding differ from BTC's? Each perp has its own crowd. If many traders chase XRP long while BTC slides, XRP longs end up paying more.

Can funding liquidate me? It reduces your margin when you pay it, so on a thin margin buffer it can push you closer.

Where do I see what I paid? The funding history in your futures account lists each payment.
