Isolated vs Cross on KCEX: the same 0.01 BTC long liquidates near 77,120 in one mode and near 60,320 in the other. Here is what that extra room costs

Example first, with made-up round numbers. You open a 0.01 BTC long on the KCEX BTC/USDT perpetual at 80,000 USDT with 25x leverage, and you have 200 USDT in your futures account.
- Position value: 0.01 x 80,000 = 800 USDT
- Initial margin at 25x: 800 / 25 = 32 USDT
- Maintenance margin at a 0.4% rate: 800 x 0.004 = 3.2 USDT
From here, one setting decides how much of that 200 USDT is on the line: the margin mode.
The attached image is from KCEX's own help-center guide to margin modes. It shows the Margin Mode pop-up over the BTC/USDT futures page, with Isolated selected above Cross and the "Applies to all futures" box ticked. On the right, the order panel is set to Isolated and 25X, with Available 66.51 USDT, Max Long and Max Short of 1,653.09 USDT each, and fees of Maker 0% / Taker 0.01%. Small detail worth noticing: 66.51 x 25 would be 1,662.75, but the panel shows 1,653.09, so don't treat available balance x leverage as an exact ceiling.
BEFORE: Isolated
KCEX's description: a set amount of margin is assigned to the position when you open it. If it falls below the maintenance level the position is liquidated, and your maximum loss is that margin plus anything you added. Other funds in the account are not affected.
KCEX's long-position formula from its futures FAQ (fees left out): liquidation price = (maintenance margin - position margin + entry x quantity) / quantity = (3.2 - 32 + 800) / 0.01 = 77,120 USDT
That is a 3.6% drop from entry. If it happens, you lose about 28.8 of the 32 USDT, and the other 168 USDT is untouched. Adding the 0.01% taker fee through KCEX's estimated-liquidation formula only moves it to about 77,116.
AFTER: Cross
In cross mode all cross positions share one cross-margin balance: the margin of every cross position plus your available margin. Treat the full 200 USDT as standing behind this one trade and the same formula gives: (3.2 - 200 + 800) / 0.01 = 60,320 USDT
That is a 24.6% drop, a lot more room. But if price gets there, about 196.8 USDT is gone, and a cross liquidation on KCEX hits every cross position you hold, not only this one. Cross liquidation prices also keep moving: profit on one cross position adds buffer for the others, and a loss on one eats into it. That is why KCEX says to judge cross risk by margin ratio, not by a single liquidation price.
What actually triggers liquidation
KCEX liquidates when the margin ratio reaches 100% or more:
- Isolated: (maintenance margin + liquidation fee) / (position margin + unrealized P&L)
- Cross: (cross maintenance margin + liquidation fee) / cross-margin account equity, where equity leaves out isolated margin, isolated P&L and margin held by pending orders
Liquidation follows the mark price, not the last trade, and the estimated liquidation price on screen is for reference only.
Why leverage does not set your maintenance rate
This is the part people get backwards. On KCEX the maintenance margin rate follows position size, not the leverage you pick. Leverage sets how big a position you are allowed to hold. KCEX's own illustrative BTC/USDT tier table (its example, not live figures):
- Tier 1: up to 125x, 0 to 30 BTC, 0.4%
- Tier 2: up to 62x, 30 to 36 BTC, 0.8%
- Tier 3: up to 41x, 36 to 42 BTC, 1.2%
- and so on to Tier 10: up to 12x, 78 to 84 BTC, 4.0%
In that table, 100x caps you at 30 BTC and 50x at 36 BTC. Grow a 16 BTC position to 31 BTC and the rate goes from 0.4% to 0.8%. If that position is then liquidated, KCEX first takes the 1 BTC sitting in Tier 2, drops the rest back to Tier 1 and checks again. Live tiers for each pair are under Futures Information > Position Tiers.
Switching rules that catch people
- Leverage and margin mode cannot be changed while you have pending orders.
- With an open position you can switch Isolated to Cross, but not Cross back to Isolated.
- Lowering leverage on an open position means adding margin to it. Raising leverage does not pull margin out automatically; you reduce it yourself if you want.
- On an isolated position, the edit icon next to Margin under Current Positions opens Add / Reduce, and you can turn on Auto Margin Addition. With it on, a liquidation first cancels that pair's open orders and tops the position up from your available margin.
- Funding moves cross liquidation prices whether you pay or receive it. In isolated, receiving funding leaves the liquidation price alone, but if you owe funding and available margin is short, it comes out of position margin and the price shifts.
The same rules cover KCEX's ETH, XRP, SUI and DOGE perps; each pair has its own tier table.
Before your next order:
- Isolated or Cross chosen on purpose, before any orders are pending
- Margin known in USDT, not just as a leverage number
- Estimated liquidation price and margin ratio read
- Position tier for your size checked
- Auto Margin Addition on or off by choice
