Myth vs fact on Fed week funding
BTC longs are paying, but on KCEX's HYPE perp the shorts are the ones paying, every 4 hours

[Current events] A common mistake this week is assuming that a risk-off market means every perp has negative funding and shorts get paid everywhere. The KCEX numbers this morning show it is not that simple.
Background: Bitcoin slipped under 80,000 in Asian hours on Monday as traders cut risk ahead of Wednesday's Fed decision, according to CoinDesk. ETH, XRP and SOL fell 2-3%, while DOGE, ZEC, HYPE and BNB lost 1-2%. Most economists expect the Fed to hold, so the focus is on what Chair Kevin Warsh says about a possible December hike.
The image is KCEX's live HYPE/USDT perpetual page at about 10:29 AM ET: last 77.452 (+1.44%), index 77.483, mark 77.456, funding -0.0018% with 1:30:39 left, 24h high 77.879, 24h low 74.956, 24h turnover 43.757M USDT, open interest 3.380M USDT. The 15 minute chart marks the 74.956 low, with price climbing back toward the high since then.
Q: Isn't funding just positive for everything in a sell-off? A: No. On KCEX at capture, BTCUSDT funding was +0.0081% (longs pay shorts) while HYPE was -0.0018% (shorts pay longs). Across venues, a tracker showed about 69.7% of Binance BTC accounts net long (long/short ratio 2.30) even after the drop. The crowd is still leaning long on BTC, while on HYPE the lean has tipped slightly short.
Q: Why does the interval matter? A: KCEX's contract data lists HYPE with a 4 hour funding cycle, while BTC settles every 8 hours. Six HYPE settlements a day versus three for BTC means the HYPE rate can flip sign, and start costing you, twice as often.
Q: What does it cost in practice? Worked example, 5,000 USDT notional, rates held flat:
- HYPE long at -0.0018%: receives 5,000 x 0.000018 = 0.09 USDT per 4h, or 0.54 USDT per day (6 settlements)
- HYPE short at -0.0018%: pays the same 0.54 USDT per day
- BTC long at +0.0081%: pays 5,000 x 0.000081 = 0.405 USDT per 8h, or 1.215 USDT per day (3 settlements)
None of this is large on its own. The point is the direction: a BTC long and a HYPE long held side by side are on opposite ends of the funding trade right now.
Q: How could the Fed change this? A: If a hawkish surprise forces longs out, the longs-pay-shorts lean on BTC can shrink or flip quickly. If the event passes quietly, short positions opened for the event may be closed, which can push funding the other way. HYPE's 24h range was already 3.90% (74.956 to 77.879), and that is before Wednesday.
Q: What should I check before holding through Wednesday? A: The sign of the rate, the interval, and the countdown. All three sit in the KCEX header next to the mark price.
Are you trading HYPE through the Fed, or sitting this one out until after Friday's options expiry?
