Reading the realized PNL line on Bitbase futures, one fee at a time (beginner, ETH example)

By Updated

Key takeaway

Open a closed position on Bitbase and the number you care about, realized PNL, is not the same as the price difference you traded. Three lines feed into it, and since July 2026 Bitbase shows one of them in a way that confuses people looking at old trades.

This beginner walkthrough uses live ETH data to show where every cent goes.

The formula Bitbase uses

Bitbase's futures help center spells it out: Realized PNL = Closing PNL + Funding Fees - Trading Fees. Closing PNL is the price move times your size. Funding fees are positive if you received funding and negative if you paid it. Trading fees are charged on both the open and the close, based on executed order value and your fee rate.

The fee rates that apply

The current VIP table in the help center lists VIP0 futures fees at 0.0200% maker and 0.0600% taker. The taker side was adjusted on Sept 4, 2026; maker rates did not change. Higher tiers go down to 0.0050% maker and 0.0250% taker at VIP7.

The live numbers I used

Bitbase's public market data for ETH_USDT on Nov 3, 2026 at 10:01 AM ET: last 2,286.63, mark 2,286.66, 24h open 2,285.94, 24h low 2,236.08, 24h high 2,308.29, and about 165.3 million USDT of quote volume. Funding 0.02% per 8-hour interval, cap +/-2% per interval, next settlement 11:00 AM ET.

Worked example: a 0.5 ETH long, line by line

To keep the math real, use the day's actual low and high as the entry and exit. This is a teaching example, not a trade anyone could time perfectly.

  1. Open: buy 0.5 ETH at 2,236.08 with a market order. Order value is 1,118.04 USDT. Taker fee at 0.06% is about 0.671 USDT.
  2. Hold through one settlement. Funding at 0.02% on roughly 1,143.33 USDT of notional at mark is about 0.229 USDT. The rate is positive, so the long pays; this line is negative.
  3. Close: sell 0.5 ETH at 2,308.29 with a limit order that rests first. Order value is 1,154.15 USDT. Maker fee at 0.02% is about 0.231 USDT.
  4. Closing PNL: 0.5 x (2,308.29 - 2,236.08) = 36.105 USDT.
  5. Realized PNL: 36.105 - 0.229 - (0.671 + 0.231) = about 34.97 USDT.

If you had closed with a market order instead, the closing fee would be about 0.692 USDT and realized PNL would drop to about 34.51 USDT. Same trade, about 0.46 USDT less, purely from the order type on the way out.

Why the closing fee shows 0 on some old positions

Bitbase started itemizing opening fees and closing fees separately from 1:00 AM UTC on July 16, 2026, on web first and then in the app with the July 18 release. For positions opened before that time, the closing fee field shows 0. That is a display limit of the older data, not a free exit: the actual closing fee was merged into the opening fee for those positions. Your real cost is unchanged. If you are reconciling an older trade, add the two lines together rather than reading the closing fee alone.

What funding looked like across other pairs

At the same check, BTC_USDT was at 0.02% per 8 hours, SOL_USDT about 0.0224%, DOGE_USDT about 0.0217% and XRP_USDT about 0.0276%. All positive, so longs were the side paying. On a position held for a day, three settlements at those levels add up to roughly 0.06% to 0.08% of notional, which is about the size of one taker fee.

Common mistakes

  • Reading Closing PNL and assuming that is what landed in your balance.
  • Forgetting funding is only charged if you hold at settlement, then being surprised by a small negative line after holding past 11:00 AM ET.
  • Looking at a pre-July 16 position, seeing a closing fee of 0, and thinking exits were free.
  • Doing fee math on margin. Fees use order value, so leverage does not make them smaller.
  • Ignoring that unrealized PNL can be shown on mark or last price, which can differ slightly from what you see on the chart.

FAQ

Where do I find the itemized fees? In the position details for closed futures positions on web and in the updated app.

Does Bitbase keep the funding? No, it is exchanged between buyers and sellers at each settlement interval.

Can funding increase my realized PNL? Yes, if you are on the receiving side, the funding line is added.

Pairs in this walkthrough: $ETH.USDT $BTC.USDT $SOL.USDT $DOGE.USDT $XRP.USDT

The help center's own reminder is worth keeping: calculation examples are for explanation only, and the trading page is the final word on your actual fees and settlements.
