Why are BNB longs on BloFin still paying funding after a 5% drop?

Reading the Binance hack selloff through one perp

Key takeaway

[Current events - Binance exploit selloff - BNB perp] Most of the market spent today with BNB funding below zero. On BloFin it never left positive territory. That gap is the whole lesson, so it is worth slowing down on.

The backdrop: overnight reports said roughly 6.3 billion dollars was drained from Binance, with blockchain analytics firms linking the attack to North Korea-linked hackers, about 3 billion frozen and withdrawals paused. BTC dipped to about 76,400, crypto futures liquidations jumped to roughly 1.57 billion, and BNB fell about 6.2% with open interest flat and aggregate funding negative across venues. BNB, SOL, NEAR and TRX made up the negative-funding group.

The screenshot is the live BloFin BNBUSDT perp page at 4:20 PM ET: last 700.57, down 5.47% on the day, index 700.45, mark 700.57, 24h high 741.14 and low 678.80, funding +0.0120% with 03:39:50 on the countdown to the 8 PM ET settlement, a 1h chart showing the drop and the live order book.

The checklist below uses the BloFin API pull from 4:18 PM ET.

  1. Read the rate and the history together. Current BNB-USDT funding is +0.012% per 8 hours. The last six settlements ran +0.012%, +0.012%, +0.012%, +0.0204%, +0.012% and +0.0203%. Even through the hack headlines, longs here kept paying shorts.
  1. Ask why one venue differs. Funding tracks each venue's own perp price against its own index. Mark was 700.47 and index 700.35, so the BloFin perp sat 0.12 USDT above spot. Small, but it is a premium, not a discount, and that is what keeps the rate positive. Aggregate negative funding elsewhere does not get paid on this book.
  1. Put the rate into USDT. Example position: 5 BNB long, 500 contracts at 0.01 BNB each. Value 5 x 700.54 = 3,502.70 USDT. One settlement at +0.012% costs 0.42 USDT. Three settlements a day is about 1.26 USDT. Small on its own, but it is a cost a long pays while the price is also falling.
  1. Measure the day's range. High 741.14, low 678.90. That is 62.24 USDT, or 8.40% from the top. The current price, 700.54, is 5.38% under the 24h open of 740.36.
  1. Check where an isolated long would have died. Rough liquidation room is initial margin minus maintenance. Tier 1 (up to 700 contracts) has a 0.5% maintenance rate.
  • A 20x long opened at the 741.14 high has about 5% - 0.5% = 4.5% of room. That puts liquidation near 707.79. The low printed 678.90. That position is gone.
  • A 10x long at the same high has about 9.5% of room, liquidation near 670.73. The low missed it by about 8 USDT.

Same entry, same day, and the difference was the leverage choice, not the read on the market.

  1. Watch the tier line. Past 700 contracts (7 BNB) the maintenance rate steps to 0.6% and the cap drops to 50x. A 10 BNB position, about 7,005 USDT, is already in tier 2. Bigger size means a slightly earlier liquidation at the same leverage.
  1. Separate headline risk from funding risk. Exchange-security news moves the exchange token itself. That is why BNB fell harder than BTC or ETH today. Funding tells you how traders on this book are positioned. Price tells you how the news landed. Read both.

How the rest of the board looked

For comparison, the wider market today: BTC was down about 3.1% with open interest off 1.4% and funding still positive. ETH was down about 4% with open interest down 5.8%. SOL open interest dropped about 13.3% while price fell only about 3.3%. HYPE was the outlier, up about 15% with open interest up 28%. BNB sat in the middle of a negative-funding cluster with SOL, NEAR and TRX, but its own open interest barely moved. Flat open interest plus a falling price usually means positions changed hands rather than closed. That fits a coin hit by news rather than by a leverage flush.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming one venue's funding matches the aggregate. Today it did not.
  • Treating a +0.012% rate as free. It is small per settlement and adds up across a multi-day hold.
  • Opening high leverage at the top of a range because the move looked over. The 20x example above shows how that ended.
  • Ignoring tier boundaries when scaling in. Adding past 700 contracts changes the maintenance rate.

Short FAQ

When is the next settlement? 8 PM ET, which is 00:00 UTC. The countdown on the page shows it.

Does a positive rate mean longs are winning? No. It means the perp traded above the index. Longs pay for that, win or lose.

Could the rate flip negative here too? It can. It is recalculated each period from the premium. Check the countdown and history before holding through a settlement.

The takeaway: when a headline hits one coin hard, check your own venue's funding sign before assuming the crowd's.
