[Current events] 12 funding settlements. That is how many times a BTC perp position opened this morning would pay or receive funding between now and Friday's monthly options expiry, and this week every one of them lands in a market that is already nervous.

Bitcoin slipped under 80,000 in Asian hours on Monday, down nearly 2% to around 79,800, as traders cut risk ahead of Wednesday's Fed decision, per CoinDesk. ETH fell about 3% to just above 2,300, XRP about 3% to 1.28, SOL about 2% to barely above 100, and DOGE, ZEC, HYPE and BNB lost 1-2%. TRX was the only large cap in the green. Most economists expect the Fed to hold at 3.75-4.00%; the market is watching Chair Kevin Warsh for hints about a December hike.

Why the funding number matters this week

Positive funding means longs pay shorts. BloFin's rate at capture was +0.0202% per 8 hours. Around the same time, a cross-exchange tracker showed BTC funding averaging about +0.0089% per 8 hours across venues. So BloFin longs were paying roughly 2.3x the average rate. That gap can close fast, but it tells you something: even after a 2% drop, plenty of traders here still want to be long.

Worked example (rate held flat, which it will not be)

  • Position: 10,000 USDT notional BTC long
  • One settlement at 0.0202%: 10,000 x 0.000202 = 2.02 USDT
  • Settlements from today 12:00 PM ET through Friday 4:00 AM ET (8h cycle): 12
  • Total: 12 x 2.02 = 24.24 USDT
  • Same trade at the 0.0089% average: 12 x 0.89 = 10.68 USDT

On its own that is small. At 20x leverage your margin is 500 USDT, and 24.24 USDT is about 4.8% of it, paid before price moves at all.

What else is on the calendar

  • Wednesday Oct 28: Fed decision and press conference; Alphabet and Microsoft earnings after the close
  • Thursday Oct 29: ECB decision; Amazon earnings
  • Friday Oct 30: BoJ decision, and roughly 11.7 to 12.2 billion dollars of BTC options expire at 08:00 UTC (4:00 AM ET), depending on the tracker

BTC liquidations across exchanges were 196M on Saturday Oct 24, about 179M of it longs. Over the 24 hours to 10:22 AM ET today the total was a quieter 42.2M (30.6M longs, 11.6M shorts). CoinDesk notes BTC still has to reclaim 82,500, the floor it lost last Thursday, which sits about 3.3% above BloFin's last price.

Mark vs index

At capture the mark (79,872.0) sat 28.9 below the index (79,900.9). Liquidations are checked against mark, not last trade, so a fast wick on the last price does not by itself trigger them. A Fed-day move that drags the index will.

Bottom line: before you hold a leveraged BTC long through a week with three central banks and a big expiry, count the settlements and multiply, and check whether your venue's rate is above or below the market average.
