Apple Q4 earnings and the BYDFi AAPL perp
Apple beat on revenue and still fell after hours, the memory-cost squeeze and the 45-46% margin guide
Key takeaway
Apple's September-quarter report is a clean case study in why a stock can drop after beating on revenue. The short version: demand held up, and the cost of building the products did not. Here is the breakdown in plain numbers, plus what it means if you trade Apple as a USDT-margined stock perp on BYDFi.

What came in strong
Total revenue was $114.48 billion, up 12% from $102.47 billion a year earlier, against a consensus near $113.4 billion.
- iPhone: $57.58 billion, up 17%, ahead of roughly $56.5 billion expected. That was with only about eight days of iPhone 18 Pro sales in the quarter and none of the foldable iPhone Duo, which reached stores on October 23.
- Mac: $10.79 billion, up 24%.
- Services: $31.57 billion, up 10% and an all-time high, though 9.8% growth is the slowest since September 2022.
What came in weak
- iPad: $6.23 billion, down 10%, blamed on supply limits and a tough comparison with last year's launch.
- Wearables, Home and Accessories: $8.30 billion, down 8%.
- Greater China: $17.54 billion against an estimate around $18.75 billion, a miss of roughly $1.2 billion.
The margin story
Gross margin printed at 47.9%, up from 47.2%. But about one percentage point of that, worth 5 cents of EPS, came from tariff refunds that Apple says will not repeat. Strip it out and the underlying margin was around 46.9%.
The bigger issue is memory chips. They sit inside every iPhone, Mac and iPad, and management called current memory pricing unprecedented, with costs expected to rise in the December quarter and beyond. Apple has been cushioning that with chips bought earlier at lower prices, cheaper non-memory parts, and price increases in June and September. Inventories jumped to $14.54 billion from $5.72 billion a year earlier, and purchase obligations rose $33 billion in one quarter. Buying ahead protects the next quarter; it does not make the cost disappear.
Operating expenses rose 21% to $19.19 billion, with research and development up about 32%.
The guidance that moved the stock
| Metric | September quarter | December guide |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue growth | 12% | +7% to +10% |
| Gross margin | 47.9% | 45% to 46% |
| Services growth | 9.8% | +8% to +9% |
| Operating expenses | $19.19B | $20.4B to $20.8B |
Apple expects a record revenue quarter, implying roughly $154 billion to $158 billion, but says supply is the limit: memory constrains Mac and iPad, and iPhone Duo demand is ahead of supply. The margin guide and the Services guide were the clear shortfalls against expectations.
Shareholder math
Net income rose about 12% to $30.71 billion, but diluted EPS rose about 14% because the share count fell around 1.6%. That gap is the buyback. Apple returned $28 billion in the quarter, $24 billion in repurchases and $3.9 billion in dividends, and ended with about $137 billion of cash against $80 billion of debt. For the full fiscal year, revenue was $478.8 billion, up 15%.
How the stock reacted
Apple closed at $338.32 on November 2, down 1.83%, before the release, then fell roughly 3% to 4% after hours. At about 36 times next year's expected earnings, a margin step-down of 190 to 290 basis points hits hard, which is why guidance outweighed the beat.
If you trade the perp
AAPL follows the share price, so earnings gaps carry straight into it. A few habits help:
- Expect the biggest moves around the US open, when the full session reprices the report.
- Keep leverage low enough that a 4% to 6% gap does not threaten liquidation.
- Watch funding around big events; crowded positioning shows up there first.
- Remember that broad-market contracts like SPY can move with Apple because of its index weight.
Crypto often trades in step with mega-cap tech on risk-on or risk-off days, so BTC, ETH and SOL positions can feel an Apple-led move too, though the link is loose.
What to check next
- The annual filing, for purchase obligations and segment detail.
- Inventory: a falling balance means the cheap-memory cushion is running down.
- Any date for iPhone Duo, Mac and iPad supply catching up.
- The January report, where the 45% to 46% margin range gets tested.
The takeaway: Apple sold everything it could make. Whether it can make it profitably is the January question.
