BloFin Coin-M vs USDT-M perpetuals: why a BTCUSD long can liquidate sooner than the same BTCUSDT long

Live BloFin BTCUSD Perp board, captured Oct 18 around 10:23 PM ET: last 82,230.9, Mark 82,233.9, Index 82,290.3, 24h range 80,565.8 to 82,437.3, funding +0.0172% with 05:36:20 on the countdown. Look at the order book column headers: amounts are in USD, not BTC. That one detail is the whole story of a Coin-M contract.

BloFin lists the same bitcoin exposure two ways. BTCUSDT is the linear contract: you post USDT, you get paid in USDT. BTCUSD is the inverse (Coin-M) contract: it is quoted in dollars, but you post BTC as margin and settle in BTC. Same price feed, same liquidation engine. Very different account behavior once the market moves.

Sizing: you type dollars, you carry coin

On BTCUSD you enter size as a dollar figure, from 1 USD upward. A $6,000 position opened at $60,000 is 0.1 BTC of exposure. On BTCUSDT you size in the coin directly. Same exposure, two ways of counting it, and mixing them up is the first mistake people make when they switch.

Why the payoff bends

Linear PnL is a subtraction: size x (exit - entry). Inverse PnL is a reciprocal: dollar size x (1/entry - 1/exit), paid in BTC. Run the $6,000 long from $60,000 both ways:

MoveCoin-M (BTCUSD)USDT-M (BTCUSDT)
Up to $70,000+0.0143 BTC (about +$1,000)+1,000 USDT
Down to $50,000-0.0200 BTC (about -$1,000)-1,000 USDT

In dollars the two land in the same place. In coin they do not: the losing side takes about 40% more BTC than the winning side pays. If your goal is stacking BTC, that asymmetry matters more than any fee tier.

The part that costs money: liquidation distance

Back that same $6,000 long with 0.05 BTC of margin, worth $3,000 at entry. Let price fall to $50,000:

  1. The position loses 0.0200 BTC, leaving 0.0300 BTC of margin.
  2. At $50,000 that margin is worth $1,500.
  3. You lost $1,000 on the trade but $1,500 of collateral value.

The extra $500 is the collateral repricing underneath you. With 3,000 USDT as margin instead, the same trade leaves $2,000. That is why a Coin-M long reaches its maintenance level sooner than a USDT-M long built from the same mental model. The liquidation math itself works the same on both contracts; you just arrive faster on the inverse one.

Shorts run the mirror image. As price falls, the short gains coin while the collateral loses dollar value at the same moment the position is winning, so the margin ratio improves through the move. A Coin-M short is gentler than a Coin-M long, which surprises a lot of people who assume coin margin is always the riskier choice.

Funding is paid in coin too

BloFin settles BTCUSD funding every 8 hours, starting 00:00 Hong Kong time. Hold a $6,000 short through one settlement at 0.01% and you receive 60 cents, delivered as BTC. At $60,000 that is 0.00001 BTC. At $50,000 the same 60 cents is 0.000012 BTC, about 20% more coin. A funding-collecting short on BTCUSD builds a coin balance, not a dollar balance, and it builds it fastest when the coin is cheapest. Whether that is good depends on what you want to be holding at the end.

Which one fits

  • Think and report in dollars, want liquidation prices you can sanity-check in your head: BTCUSDT is the easier default. A stablecoin balance moves in cents, not percent, so your margin ratio only answers to the trade.
  • Already hold BTC, want PnL and funding to land in BTC, or want to hedge the dollar value of a coin stack without selling it: BTCUSD is built for that, as long as you size longs with the double exposure in mind.

Quick checklist before a BTCUSD long

  1. Convert your USD size to coin at entry so you know the real exposure.
  2. Price your margin at the stop level, not at entry. That is the number liquidation cares about.
  3. Leave more cushion than you would on BTCUSDT for the same leverage.
  4. Check the funding countdown on the header (it was 05:36:20 on this capture) and remember the payment arrives in BTC.

Same chart, same Mark and Index logic, different unit underneath. Read the unit first.
