BMT up 22% while shorts pay almost 1% every 4 hours: an advanced Bitunix funding-vs-fees breakdown

By Updated

Key takeaway

Up 22.5% on the day and still showing one of the most negative funding rates on the board. That combination on BMTUSDT is a good live case for working out when funding, not the trading fee, becomes the real cost of a perp position. This is the advanced tier, so expect more arithmetic than usual.

Snapshot from Bitunix public market data, Nov 3, 2026 at 10:02 AM ET: BMTUSDT last 0.02555 against a 24h open of 0.02086, with a range of 0.02043 to 0.02791 and about 3.67 million USDT of quote volume. Mark price 0.02554, index 0.02575. Funding -0.976263% per 4-hour interval, with a cap of +/-2%. Max leverage on the contract: 10x.

Negative funding means shorts pay longs. So anyone short BMT into the 11:00 AM ET settlement was due to pay close to 1% of notional for a single interval, while price had already squeezed higher. Mark sitting about 0.8% under index tells the same story: the perp was trading at a discount to spot, and funding was pushing to close it.

Here is how I would break the cost down, step by step.

  1. Start with the fee schedule. Bitunix VIP 0 futures fees are 0.02% maker and 0.06% taker. Fees are charged on position size, not margin, and the open and close are billed separately: open fee uses the opening price, close fee uses the closing price.
  1. Size the example. Take 300 USDT of margin at 5x, so a 1,500 USDT short. A market entry costs 1,500 x 0.06% = 0.90 USDT. A market exit at a similar price costs about the same, so roughly 1.80 USDT round trip.
  1. Price one settlement. At -0.976263%, the short pays 1,500 x 0.976263% = about 14.64 USDT at the next settlement. That is 4.9% of the 300 USDT margin in one payment, and more than eight times the full taker round trip.
  1. Convert it to fee units. One interval at that rate equals about 16.3 taker sides (0.976263 / 0.06). Put differently, saving fees with limit orders is noise next to holding through even one settlement on this contract.
  1. Stress the leverage. Push the same 300 USDT to the 10x max and notional becomes 3,000 USDT. Now one settlement costs about 29.29 USDT, near 9.8% of margin. Funding does not care about your margin; it is charged on notional.
  1. Stretch the clock. A 4h contract settles six times a day. If the rate held where it is (it rarely does, this is only to show scale), six payments on the 1,500 USDT short would total about 87.86 USDT, over 29% of margin, before price does anything.
  1. Check the cap. The rate can move up to +/-2% per interval on BMT. The current print is about half the cap, so there is room for it to get worse, not only better.

The same scan showed BMT was not alone. Other 4h contracts printing deep negative funding at the same time: 1000CATUSDT at -0.7143%, ERAUSDT at -0.245092%, FLOCKUSDT at -0.194557% and GTCUSDT at -0.120653%. For contrast, BTCUSDT was at +0.01% per 8 hours with a +/-0.3% cap. That gap, roughly a hundred times per interval and twice the settlement count, is why one fee-and-funding rule of thumb cannot cover both majors and small caps.

Common mistakes on contracts like this

  • Shorting a squeeze because it "looks overextended" without checking the next funding payment. You can be right on direction and still bleed.
  • Going long only to collect funding. The rate is negative because many traders are short and price can drop fast; a 3% move erases several intervals of income.
  • Reading the rate as daily. On a 4h contract it is per 4 hours.
  • Forgetting the close fee is billed on the closing price. After a big move the close fee is a little larger or smaller than the open fee.
  • Ignoring mark vs index. Liquidation runs off mark, and on a discounted perp that gap can move quickly when funding pulls it back.

FAQ

Q: Is funding paid if I flip from short to flat one minute before settlement? A: No. Only positions open at the settlement time pay or receive.

Q: Does Bitunix keep the funding? A: No. It is exchanged between longs and shorts. The trading fee is the venue's charge.

Q: Where is the interval shown? A: Next to the funding countdown on the contract page. 4h and 8h contracts sit side by side, so check each one.

Q: Will a higher VIP tier fix this? A: Lower tiers cut trading fees (VIP 1 taker is 0.05%), but funding is unaffected by fee tier.

Checklist before holding any 4h perp through settlement: rate, interval, cap, notional, and the minutes left on the countdown.
