The screenshot is the live KCEX ETHUSDT perp page at 4:20 PM ET: last 2,240.11, down 4.09% on the day, index 2,241.61, mark 2,240.58, funding -0.0200% with 03:40:56 on the countdown, 24h high 2,336.23 and low 2,174.96, open interest 22.504M USDT, a 15 minute chart and the order book.
Why it moved. Overnight reports of a roughly 6.3 billion dollar exploit at Binance pushed BTC to about 76,400 and ETH down about 4%. ETH liquidations were around 361 million across the market and ETH open interest fell about 5.8%. One derivatives desk noted market-wide ETH funding turned negative after twelve straight positive periods. On KCEX the flip came three settlements ago, and the predicted rate is now about five times deeper than the last print (0.02 / 0.0039 = 5.1).
Negative funding means shorts pay longs. Here is what that does to three different traders.
Scenario A: the short who arrived late
Short 2 ETH at 2,239.37, position value 4,478.74 USDT.
- At -0.02%, one settlement costs the short 0.90 USDT.
- If the rate held for a full day (three settlements), about 2.69 USDT.
- At the previous -0.0039%, one settlement was only 0.17 USDT.
KCEX lists 0.01% taker on this contract, so a market in and out on 4,478.74 is also about 0.90 USDT. One settlement at today's rate costs as much as the whole round trip in fees.
Scenario B: the leveraged short near the low
Rough liquidation room on an isolated short is initial margin minus the 0.5% maintenance rate.
- 20x short at 2,239.37: room about 4.5%, liquidation near 2,340.14. That is just 3.91 above today's 24h high.
- 25x short at the same price: room about 3.5%, liquidation near 2,317.75, which is below the 24h high of 2,336.23.
- A 20x short opened at the 2,174.96 low would have room up to about 2,272.83. Price is already at 2,239.37.
The day's range was 161.27 USDT, about 6.90% of the high. A rebound of half the range would hit the 25x example.
Scenario C: the long who gets paid to wait
Long 2 ETH at 2,239.37 at 5x. Margin about 895.75 USDT. While funding is negative this position receives about 0.90 USDT per settlement. That does not offset a price drop. A 1% fall is 44.79 USDT, about 50 settlements' worth. Being paid funding is a small side effect, not a thesis.
How ETH compares with the rest
ETH was not alone. SOL open interest fell about 13.3% market-wide and its funding also flipped negative. BNB, the token most exposed to the exploit headlines, dropped about 6.2% with funding negative. BTC held positive funding even while falling. HYPE went the other way entirely, with open interest up about 28%. So the ETH flip on KCEX is part of a broader shift where the majors outside BTC moved to short-leaning funding in the same session.
What the flip actually signals
Sellers have become the crowded side on this book. Crowded shorts in a fast market can squeeze. That is a description of positioning, not a forecast.
Common mistakes
- Opening a short after the move and ignoring the funding bill.
- Using 125x because the contract allows it. At 125x initial margin is 0.8% and maintenance 0.5%, so about 0.3% of room, roughly 6.7 USDT on ETH.
- Treating the predicted rate as fixed. It is recalculated each period from the premium.
- Comparing KCEX funding with another venue's and assuming they settle the same.
Short FAQ
When does it settle? Every 8 hours. The page countdown showed 03:40:56 at 4:20 PM ET, so 8 PM ET.
Does fair price matter? Yes. Liquidations use fair price, not last. Fair 2,239.46 sat close to last today.
Do I pay if I close before settlement? No. Funding applies to positions open at the settlement time.
Checklist before holding ETH through the next print:
- Check the sign and size of the predicted rate.
- Convert it to USDT on your position size.
- Compare it with your fees.
- Place liquidation outside the 24h range.
- Recheck after each settlement.
