Headline risk on RUNE: sizing the BYDFi perp through the Thorchain freeze debate

By Updated

Key takeaway

Headline risk is the chance that one piece of news, not the chart, decides your trade. $RUNE.USDT gave a clean example this weekend. Thorchain's token was the biggest loser in a 100-coin large-cap index on Monday, down 6.4%, after the FBI, the Secret Service and IRS Criminal Investigation urged Thorchain node operators to block addresses tied to the Binance hackers.

Co-founder JP Thor argued against freezing funds. By Monday morning it was down around 17% over 24 hours. This post uses the RUNE_USDT perpetual on BYDFi to show how to size around that kind of risk.

Context first

Binance reopened withdrawals in phases after its $6.3 billion hack and reported a net $3.64 billion outflow. Across crypto futures, volume jumped 56% while open interest stayed near $137.1 billion, so most of the action was churn. $BTC.USDT and $ETH.USDT open interest were flat. RUNE is different because the story lands directly on the protocol: if hacked funds move through Thorchain, regulators and node operators are now part of the price.

The contract right now

BYDFi public contract data, 3:53 PM ET, Nov 2:

  • Last 0.5454, fair price 0.5454, index 0.5463
  • 24h high 0.5775, low 0.4945
  • Change -2.79% on the day, -13.78% over 7 days
  • Open interest 5,489,610 RUNE at 1 RUNE per contract, about 2.99 million USDT
  • 24h turnover about 2.83 million USDT
  • Funding 0.0100% per 8 hours, cap plus or minus 2%
  • Max leverage 50x, maintenance margin rate 1%, maker 0.02%, taker 0.06%

Daily closes by UTC day: Oct 30 at 0.6483, Oct 31 at 0.6293, Nov 1 at 0.5526, and Nov 2 so far at 0.5454. The Nov 1 day alone was down about 12.2%.

Step 1: Measure the range, not the change

The day's change is only -2.79%, which sounds calm. The rolling 24h range says otherwise: (0.5775 - 0.4945) / 0.4945 = 16.78%. A coin can finish close to flat after swinging more than 16% inside the day. Your stop and your liquidation price live inside that swing.

Step 2: Turn the range into a leverage ceiling

Rough cushion on an isolated position: 1 / leverage minus the 1% maintenance rate.

  • 50x: 2% - 1% = 1%. Today's range is almost 17 times that
  • 20x: 5% - 1% = 4%. Still a quarter of the range
  • 5x: 20% - 1% = 19%. Wider than the full 24h range
  • 3x: about 32%. Room for a second headline

On a protocol facing a live regulatory story, 3x to 5x is where today's range alone would not have closed you out.

Step 3: Add the costs

Worked example, 1,000 USDT notional:

  • Taker to open and close: 1,000 x 0.0006 x 2 = 1.20 USDT
  • Funding at 0.0100%: 0.10 USDT per settlement, 0.30 USDT per day
  • A range-sized move: 1,000 x 16.78% = 167.80 USDT

The cost of trading is small. The cost of being wrong in a 16% range is not.

Step 4: Check positioning

Open interest of about 2.99 million USDT is a little larger than a full day of turnover at 2.83 million USDT. Positions are not flipping over quickly here. Funding at the standard 0.0100% says longs pay a normal amount and nobody is crowding either side. Funding even dipped to 0.0028% at the 3:00 AM ET settlement before going back to 0.0100%.

Step 5: Plan for the next headline

The freeze debate is not settled. Decide before you enter what you will do if node operators do or do not block the addresses. Do not decide on the candle.

Common mistakes

  • Judging risk by the daily change instead of the high-to-low range
  • Using leverage picked for $BNB.USDT or BTC on a token with five times the range
  • Placing a stop exactly at the 24h low of 0.4945, where many others sit
  • Assuming standard funding means a quiet market
  • Holding size through a known open question with no plan

FAQ

Why is RUNE moving when the hack was on Binance? US agencies asked Thorchain node operators to block addresses linked to the hackers. That turns it into a governance fight that lands directly on the token.

Is 2.99 million USDT of open interest a lot? It is small next to large caps like $NEAR.USDT or BNB, but meaningful next to RUNE's own daily turnover on the contract.

What is the fair price on the contract page? It is the reference price shown next to last, built to track the index. Check the contract rules for which price triggers liquidation and do your math with that one.

Summary: on headline tokens, the range sets your leverage, and the news sets your plan.
