How many hours until funding eats the fee you saved? XRP on BYDFi, worked out (intermediate)

Key takeaway

Limit orders save you money on BYDFi. Holding a perp through funding settlements costs you money. The useful question for anyone past the basics is where those two lines cross, and the answer comes out in hours, not percentages.

I used XRP_USDT because its numbers were clean when I pulled BYDFi's public contract data on Nov 3, 2026 at about 10:01 AM ET. Last price 1.2784, up 2.39% on the day, fair price 1.2783, index 1.2781, max leverage 150x. Funding 0.01% per 8-hour interval, cap +/-2% per interval, with the next settlement at 11:00 AM ET. The nine most recent settlements were all exactly 0.01%, so this is about as steady a funding baseline as you will find.

The fee side was just as tidy. Every USDT-M contract listed in that data, from BTC_USDT and ETH_USDT to LTC_USDT, BCH_USDT and XRP_USDT, showed 0.02% maker and 0.06% taker. So the only fee decision is whether you rest a limit order (maker) or hit the book (taker).

Here is the ledger for a 2,000 USDT XRP long, margin 200 USDT at 10x.

Before you think about funding:

Taker in, taker out: 2,000 x 0.06% x 2 = 2.40 USDT Maker in, taker out: 2,000 x (0.02% + 0.06%) = 1.60 USDT Maker in, maker out: 2,000 x 0.02% x 2 = 0.80 USDT

Going all-maker instead of all-taker saves 1.60 USDT on this trade, which is 0.8% of the 200 USDT margin. That is a real saving.

After you add funding:

At 0.01%, the long pays 2,000 x 0.01% = 0.20 USDT at every settlement. Divide the fee saving by that payment: 1.60 / 0.20 = 8 settlements. With settlements every 8 hours, eight of them is 64 hours, or about two days and sixteen hours. Hold longer than that and the funding you have paid is bigger than everything you saved by being patient with limit orders.

The same math in percentage terms: the gap between taker and maker round trips is 0.12% minus 0.04% = 0.08% of notional. At 0.01% funding per interval, 0.08% buys you eight intervals. You can reuse that shortcut on any BYDFi contract on the same 0.02% / 0.06% schedule: breakeven intervals = 0.08% divided by the funding rate. If funding doubles to 0.02%, breakeven halves to four settlements, or 32 hours.

Over the nine steady settlements in the history, a 2,000 USDT long would have paid 1.80 USDT, more than the 1.60 USDT the maker route saves. In other words, a three-day swing trade on XRP at these rates spent more on funding than it saved on fees.

A couple of other numbers from the same pull help show how this shifts by contract. BCH_USDT was funding at 0.0087% per interval at a last price of 277.54, so its breakeven is a bit longer, about 9.2 intervals. LTC_USDT at 54.52 had a max leverage of 75x, half of XRP's, which matters because funding is charged on notional; the more notional you can stack on the same margin, the faster that 0.20 USDT becomes 2 USDT. BTC_USDT was at 77,336.2 with 500x available.

Mistakes I see at this level

Splitting hairs over maker versus taker on a trade you plan to hold for a week. Past the breakeven point, funding is the bigger lever, so the better question is which side of funding you are on.

Assuming a steady rate stays steady. Nine flat prints in a row is a pattern, not a promise. The cap is +/-2% per interval, so the rate has room to move a long way.

Doing the math on margin. Fees and funding both use position size. A 200 USDT margin at 10x is a 2,000 USDT position for cost purposes.

Short FAQ

Does a negative rate flip the math? Yes. If shorts pay longs, a long collects funding and the breakeven question becomes how much funding offsets the taker fee.

Is funding paid if I close before 11:00 AM ET? No, only positions open at settlement.

Does BYDFi keep the funding? No, it moves between longs and shorts.

Coins in this breakdown: $XRP.USDT $BCH.USDT $LTC.USDT $BTC.USDT $ETH.USDT

The formula to keep: breakeven settlements = (taker round trip - maker round trip) / funding rate per interval.
