Isolated vs cross on the same DOGE long on BloFin: liquidation near 0.07137 in one mode, 0.05917 in the other

By Updated

Key takeaway

. Worked example first. 100 contracts of DOGE-USDT on BloFin is 100,000 DOGE (1 contract = 1,000 DOGE). At the 0.07879 mark price from BloFin's public API at 10:19 AM ET, that is 7,879 USDT of exposure. Open it at 10x and the initial margin is 787.90 USDT. Same trade, same coin, same leverage.

The only switch we flip is Cross or Isolated.

Why the switch matters. BloFin liquidates when the margin ratio falls to 100% or below. In isolated mode the ratio is (position margin + PnL) / (maintenance margin + fee). In cross mode it is (account balance + all PnL) / all (maintenance margin + fees). So isolated defends the position with the margin you locked in. Cross defends it with everything in the futures account.

The image is BloFin's live DOGEUSDT perpetual page at about 10:19 AM ET: last 0.07883, +1.67% on the day, index 0.07885, mark 0.07882, 24h high 0.08062 and low 0.07753, funding +0.0220% with the countdown to the 12:00 PM ET settlement, the 1h chart and the order book. The mark price in that header is the one liquidation watches, not the last trade.

Before: isolated, 787.90 USDT locked

  • Tier: 100 contracts sits in BloFin's first DOGE tier (0 to 1,000 contracts), maintenance margin rate 0.65%, max 75x
  • BloFin's isolated long formula, leaving out the liquidation-fee term: (787.90 - 7,879) / (100,000 x (0.0065 - 1)) = about 0.07137
  • That is about 9.41% under the mark
  • Worst case: you lose the 787.90 USDT. The rest of the account is untouched

After: cross, 2,000 USDT account balance, this is the only position

  • Same tier, same 0.65%
  • BloFin's cross single-position formula: (2,000 - 7,879) / (100,000 x (0.0065 - 1)) = about 0.05917
  • That is about 24.9% under the mark
  • Worst case: the whole 2,000 USDT is on the line, and any other cross position, funding payment or fee moves this number too

What changes the picture

  • Size, not leverage, sets the maintenance rate. Above 1,000 contracts (1,000,000 DOGE, roughly 78,790 USDT at this mark) the rate steps to 1% and max leverage drops to 50x. The tiers keep climbing to 50% at the very top
  • Funding is paid out of margin. At 0.0220% per 8h this position pays about 1.73 USDT per settlement, which nudges an isolated liq price up slightly over time
  • Today's range: the 24h low of 0.07753 is only about 1.6% under the mark, so neither mode is close yet, but at 50x isolated it would be

The tier table is per contract, so the same exercise on BTC, ETH, SOL or XRP gives different steps. Check the table for the coin you actually trade.

Takeaway: isolated caps the loss and pulls the liquidation price closer, cross pushes it away by betting the whole account.

Worked steps to run this on your own DOGE trade:

  1. Convert contracts to coins. On BloFin 1 contract is 1,000 DOGE, so 100 contracts is 100,000 DOGE.
  2. Price the exposure at the mark, 0.07879 here, for 7,879 USDT.
  3. Find your tier. Up to 1,000 contracts the maintenance rate is 0.65%.
  4. For isolated, plug the position margin into the formula. For cross, plug the account balance in instead.
  5. Compare each liquidation price with the 24h low. That shows how much of a normal day's range you can sit through.

Common mistakes:

  • Thinking cross is always safer. The liquidation price is further away, but the whole 2,000 USDT can go, not just 787.90.
  • Running several cross positions and checking only one. Every cross position, fee and funding payment shares the same balance and moves every line.
  • Raising leverage to "lower risk" on a big position. Above 1,000 contracts the rate steps to 1% no matter what leverage you pick.
  • Watching the last price. Liquidation follows the mark, and the two can differ, as the header showed 0.07883 last and 0.07882 mark.

Short FAQ

  • Can I switch modes later? Plan the mode before you open, because it decides which money defends the position from the first minute.
  • Which mode should a beginner use? Isolated makes the worst case easy to see: the margin you locked in. Cross needs you to watch the whole account.
  • Does funding change the mode choice? It is paid from margin in both, about 1.73 USDT per settlement here, so it slowly eats the cushion either way.
