Say you went long SOL into this week's Fed meeting on BloFin
what the 0.0220% funding and rising open interest actually cost you

[Current events - Fed week, SOL perp]
The common mistake this week: seeing SOL dip and open interest climb at the same time, and reading it as "smart money buying". Rising OI only says more contracts exist. It does not say who is right, and on a perp it also tells you who is paying whom every 8 hours.
The backdrop. The Fed's two-day meeting started Tuesday with the decision due Wednesday, and CME FedWatch put the odds of no change near 90%. Bitcoin slipped below 80,000. In CoinDesk's 24h derivatives read, BTC and ETH fell about 1.1% and SOL fell 1.91%, while open interest rose about 1%, 0.8% and 3.6%. Funding stayed positive on all three. Elsewhere AAVE dropped 3.6% with the DeFi index, and ZEC added 0.5%.
The image is BloFin's live SOLUSDT perpetual page at about 4:19 PM ET: last 101.13, index 101.17, mark 101.13, 24h high 101.36 and low 99.12, 24h volume 274.089K SOL, funding +0.0220% with the 8:00 PM ET countdown, and the 1h chart. SOL had bounced by then, and the page shows +0.82% on the day.
Q: What does BloFin's own data say right now? A: From the public API at 4:20 PM ET: open interest 460,663 SOL (1 contract = 1 SOL), so roughly 46.59M USDT at the 101.13 mark. Funding is 0.0220% for the 8:00 PM ET settlement. The last six prints were 0.0207%, 0.0220%, 0.0220%, 0.0220%, 0.0157% and 0.0193%. So longs have been paying shorts every 8 hours through the dip.
Q: Why does OI up plus price down matter for liquidations? A: New longs opened on the way down sit with entries close to the current price. If the market moves against them after the Fed, there is little room between entry and liquidation, and forced selling from one layer can push price into the next. That is how a crowded side turns a normal move into a fast one. It works the same way for shorts if the move goes up.
Q: What does it cost to hold through the decision? Worked example: 100 SOL long at the 101.13 mark = 10,113 USDT notional. At 0.0220% per settlement that is about 2.22 USDT each time. Settlements fall at 8:00 PM, 4:00 AM and 12:00 PM ET, so three of them before Wednesday afternoon cost about 6.67 USDT, whatever the price does. Funding can also change at each print.
Q: How close is the 24h low? A: 101.13 to 99.12 is 2.01, about 1.99% of price. Rough isolated liquidation (entry x (1 - 1/leverage), ignoring maintenance margin and fees): 10x is about 91.02, 25x about 97.08, 50x about 99.11. At 50x that is one cent under today's low, so an ordinary repeat of today's range would take the position out.
Checklist before holding a SOL perp through the Fed:
- Check the funding print and its direction across the last few settlements
- Compare OI change with price change, not OI alone
- Measure your liquidation distance against the 24h range, not just the chart
- Count how many settlements land before you plan to close
- Size so a range repeat is survivable
Common mistakes heading into the decision
- Treating rising open interest as a bullish signal on its own. It only means more positions are open, not which side wins.
- Ignoring funding because the rate looks small. It's charged on the full position value at each settlement.
- Running high leverage through a scheduled event. Volatility around the announcement can reach liquidation prices that looked far away.
- Setting stops at obvious round levels where many other stops sit.
FAQ
Who pays when funding is positive? Longs pay shorts at each settlement.
Does positive funding mean price will fall? No. It shows longs are more crowded, which raises the risk of a flush, but it doesn't predict direction.
What can I do to reduce event risk? Lower size or leverage, place a stop that fires a market order, and check your liquidation price before the announcement.
