Zero-fee AVAX perp on MEXC: so what does a trade actually cost? (beginner Q&A on fees and funding)

By Updated

Key takeaway

Q: Is there really a MEXC perp with no trading fee at all? A: Yes, at least when I checked. On Nov 3, 2026 at about 10:00 AM ET, MEXC's public contract data listed AVAX_USDT with a maker fee of 0 and a taker fee of 0. ADA_USDT showed the same 0 / 0.

Most other majors I checked, including BTC_USDT, ETH_USDT, SOL_USDT, DOGE_USDT and XRP_USDT, were 0 maker and 0.02% taker. MEXC also notes that rates can vary with platform events or your region, so the fee shown on your own order panel is the one that counts.

This beginner Q&A uses that AVAX contract to answer one question: if the trading fee is zero, what is left to pay?

Q: What were the AVAX contract numbers?

A: Last price 8.593, fair price 8.595, index 8.597. Contract size 0.1 AVAX, max leverage 200x. Funding rate 0.01% per 8-hour interval, with a cap of +/-3% per interval. The next settlement was 11:00 AM ET, and MEXC's 8h settlements land at 3:00 AM, 11:00 AM and 7:00 PM ET.

Q: So what is the cost of a round trip?

A: In trading fees, zero, whether you use limit or market orders. That is the unusual part. Compare it with SOL_USDT at the same moment: a 5,000 USDT market-in, market-out round trip there costs 5,000 x 0.02% x 2 = 2 USDT. On AVAX_USDT the same round trip costs 0.

Q: Then what do I actually pay?

A: Funding, if you hold through a settlement. Funding is a payment between longs and shorts, not a fee to MEXC. When the rate is positive, longs pay shorts. When it is negative, shorts pay longs.

Worked example on a 5,000 USDT AVAX long:

  1. Size: 5,000 / 8.593 is about 581.9 AVAX, or roughly 5,819 contracts at 0.1 AVAX each.
  2. Margin at 10x: 500 USDT.
  3. Trading fees: 0 to open, 0 to close.
  4. Funding at the current 0.01%: 5,000 x 0.01% = 0.50 USDT per settlement, paid by the long.
  5. Hold three days (nine settlements) at that rate: about 4.50 USDT.

Q: Has the rate actually been 0.01% every time?

A: Not quite. The last nine AVAX settlements I pulled, newest first, were 0, 0.0021%, then 0.01% five times, then -0.0134% and -0.0018%. Added up that is a net +0.0369%. On the 5,000 USDT long that would have cost about 1.85 USDT over three days, less than the fixed 4.50 USDT estimate, because two settlements paid the long side instead.

Q: Why does the cap matter for a beginner?

A: Because it tells you how far funding can move in one interval. AVAX_USDT allowed up to +/-3% per settlement. BTC_USDT, by comparison, had a cap of +/-0.18% and was also printing 0.01%. A 3% payment on 5,000 USDT would be 150 USDT, which is 30% of the 500 USDT margin in a single interval. It is rare, but the cap is the honest worst case.

Q: Does leverage change any of this?

A: Funding is charged on the full position size. At 10x, the 0.50 USDT payment is 0.1% of your margin. At 50x on the same margin, the position is five times bigger and so is the payment.

Common mistakes with zero-fee pairs

  • Treating "zero fee" as "zero cost" and holding for weeks without checking funding.
  • Forgetting the fee can change. A promotion or region setting can move it, so check before every trade, not once.
  • Overtrading because each trade feels free. Spread, slippage and price moves still apply.
  • Picking a pair only for the fee. A zero-fee pair with a funding rate pinned against you can cost more than a 0.02% pair with flat funding.

Quick FAQ

Do I pay funding if I close before 11:00 AM ET? No, only positions open at settlement pay or receive.

Is fair price the same as last price? No. Fair price is used for PnL and liquidation, so watch it, not just the last trade.

Can a zero-fee pair start charging fees? Yes. Treat the order panel as the final word.

Picture two traders: one scalps AVAX ten times a day and never holds through 11:00 AM; the other opens once and sits for a week. On this contract the first one pays almost nothing, and the second one is the one funding is built for.
