Before you try 300x on SOL today
the MEXC numbers behind a 7.6% range, open interest leaving and funding turning negative
Key takeaway
[Current events - SOL after the Binance exploit flush] There is a common belief that a big leverage cap means a big edge on a volatile day. Today's SOL numbers on MEXC show the opposite. The setup.

Overnight reports of a roughly 6.3 billion dollar exploit at Binance knocked BTC to about 76,400 and set off around 1.57 billion in futures liquidations, mostly longs. SOL stood out: market-wide, its open interest fell about 13.3% while price fell about 3.3%, and its funding flipped negative alongside NEAR. When open interest drops four times faster than price, positions are being closed or liquidated, not opened.

API figures at 4:18 PM ET:
- last 94.97, fair 94.97, index 95.03
- 24h high 99.89, low 92.29, range 7.60 USDT or 7.61% of the high
- funding -0.0067% for the next settlement; the previous six were +0.01%, +0.0043%, +0.01%, +0.01%, +0.0007%, +0.01%
- open interest 38,314,685 contracts of 0.1 SOL, about 3.83 million SOL
- max leverage 300, maintenance rate 0.23%, initial rate 0.333%, taker 0.02%, maker 0
The rate moved from -0.0067% to -0.0068% between the API pull and the screenshot. It updates live until settlement.
How SOL compares with the other majors
SOL had the sharpest open-interest drop of the large caps. BTC open interest fell about 1.4% and ETH about 5.8%. BNB, hit directly by the exploit news, fell about 6.2% with open interest roughly flat. HYPE moved the other way, with open interest up about 28%. Negative funding showed up on BNB, SOL, NEAR and TRX. In plain terms, SOL traders de-risked harder than almost anyone else, and what is left on the book is now paying to be long less than it was this morning.
The leverage ladder against today's range
Rough liquidation room on an isolated position is initial margin minus the 0.23% maintenance rate. On a long at 94.97:
300x: initial 0.333%, room about 0.10%, which is about 0.098 USDT of SOL price. Today's range was roughly 74 times that.
50x: initial 2%, room about 1.77%, liquidation near 93.29. The 24h low of 92.29 is below it.
10x: initial 10%, room about 9.77%, liquidation near 85.69. Clear of the whole 24h range.
Fees matter at the top of the ladder too. Taker is 0.02% each way, so a market round trip is 0.04% of position value. At 300x that equals about 12% of the margin before price moves at all.
What the funding flip means in USDT
Example position: 100 SOL long at 94.97 = 9,497 USDT, at 10x so margin is 949.70.
- At -0.0067%, longs receive about 0.64 USDT per settlement.
- Three settlements a day is about 1.91 USDT.
Shorts pay that. It is small next to price: a 1% move on the same position is 94.97 USDT.
Why negative funding after a flush matters: the longs who were paying through the previous six positive settlements got cleared out, and the remaining book now leans short. That is positioning information, not a call on direction.
Common mistakes
- Choosing leverage from the cap. 300x is a ceiling for tiny scalps, not a sizing rule.
- Forgetting fees scale with leverage as a share of margin.
- Reading lower open interest as calm. Today it meant forced exits.
- Assuming funding stays negative. It is recomputed each period.
Short FAQ
When is the next settlement? 8 PM ET; the countdown on the page shows it.
Does MEXC liquidate on last price? Liquidation uses fair price. Fair and last both read 94.97 at 4:18 PM ET.
Do I receive funding if I open just before settlement? Only positions open at the settlement moment receive or pay. Spreads and fees on the entry still apply.
Summary: SOL open interest shrank much faster than price, funding turned negative, and a 7.61% range left room for 10x, not 50x and nowhere near 300x.
