BloFin MSFT perp hedge for Microsoft shares

How a short on the MSFTUSDT perp works as a hedge, and why leverage decides if it survives

By Updated

Key takeaway

Plenty of long-term investors end up holding more Microsoft than they meant to, either directly or through a Nasdaq-100 fund that leans on the same handful of names. Selling ends the worry but also ends the investment, and buying put options needs an options account and a premium that expires.

A third route is a hedge: keep the shares, and open a short on the MSFTUSDT perpetual that gains roughly what the shares lose when the price falls.

This is a TradFi product, a stock perpetual settled in USDT, so it behaves differently from a crypto pair in a few important ways.

How the offset works

One MSFT of contract size tracks one Microsoft share, and each contract is 0.01 MSFT. A 10 MSFT short is therefore 1,000 contracts. If Microsoft drops $10, ten shares at your broker lose $100 and the 10 MSFT short gains about 100 USDT. If it rises $10, the reverse happens.

The catch is that the two legs live in separate places. The shares and their gains sit at the broker in dollars. The short, its margin and its profit or loss sit in your futures account in USDT. In a sharp rally the share gain cannot top up the short, so the short has to survive on the margin you posted for it.

Size it in shares, not dollars

  • Hold 10 shares: short 10 MSFT (1,000 contracts)
  • Hold 25 shares: short 25 MSFT (2,500 contracts)
  • Want half protection on 25 shares: short 12.5 MSFT (1,250 contracts)

Counting in shares means the hedge stays correct as the price moves, with no daily resizing. Orders start at 0.01 MSFT and a single market order tops out at 200 MSFT. The first margin tier covers up to 200 MSFT at 2.50% maintenance margin; above that the rate rises to 3.33% and the liquidation price moves closer.

For a fund holding, multiply the fund value by Microsoft's weight and divide by the perp price. With Microsoft at 6.17% of QQQ on October 29, $10,000 of the fund held about $617 of Microsoft, or roughly 1.19 MSFT at a 520 price. That strips out Microsoft's own moves and nothing else. On QQQ's five worst days of the past year, that small short barely dented the fund's losses, and on one of them Microsoft rose while the fund fell. A whole-fund hedge belongs on a fund contract such as QQQ instead.

Hours decide when you can open it

New positions on the stock perps are meant for Nasdaq's regular session, 9:30 AM to 4 PM ET on weekdays. Outside that window the contract can switch to reduce-only, which means you can shrink or close the short at any hour but may not open or add to it. If you buy more shares in after-hours trading at your broker, they can sit unhedged until the next morning. Holiday sessions shorten the window further, so a hedge meant to cover a long weekend has to be in place before the last session closes.

Leverage is the real risk

With a 10 MSFT short opened near 520, an isolated position is liquidated after a rise of about 17% at 5x, 7.3% at 10x and 2.4% at 20x. Microsoft's largest one-day rise this year was 15.51% on July 30, the session after its prior results. That move would have closed a 10x or 20x short and left the shares bare at exactly the wrong moment.

The October 28 report showed the same thing at smaller scale. Ten shares fell $8.70 between closes, the short gained 14.70 USDT, taker fees took 6.38 and funding added 0.04, so the hedged result was a 0.34 loss. Quiet on paper, but within two hours of the release the perp's mark price jumped 6.77%, close enough to wipe out a 20x short and to come within half a percent of a 10x liquidation. A 5x short came through intact.

What it costs to hold

Funding settles every 8 hours on this contract. When the rate is positive, longs pay shorts, so a hedge can earn a small credit; when it turns negative, the short pays. Over the 30 days to November 2 the rate summed to about +0.28%, but every settlement between August 3 and August 17 was negative, a run that cost a 5,200 USDT short roughly 43 USDT. Trading fees apply twice: 0.02% maker or 0.06% taker on each side.

A live check at about 10:30 AM ET today: MSFT at 552.93, up from a 24-hour open of 515.91, funding about +0.0012% for the current 8-hour interval with the next settlement at 11 AM ET. On the crypto side BTC sat near 80,628 with funding at 0.022% per 8 hours, and ETH near 2,440. If you also run SOL or other crypto positions in the same account, remember that isolated margin keeps the hedge from borrowing their collateral.

Before you press sell

  1. Confirm the regular session is open.
  2. Switch the panel to isolated margin.
  3. Pick leverage low enough to survive a report-night spike.
  4. Enter size in MSFT equal to your shares, leave reduce-only unticked.
  5. Read the liquidation price before confirming.

A hedge that gets liquidated in the spike it was built for is just a second losing trade, so give it room.
