Same funding rate, different clock
why a 4h perp on BloFin can cost twice as much as you think (intermediate guide)
Key takeaway
Two funding numbers can look almost identical on the screen and still charge you very different amounts by the end of the day. The difference is the clock printed next to them. I pulled BloFin's public perp data at 9:59 AM ET on Nov 3, 2026, and the FLOCK-USDT perp made the point better than any made-up example.

Its funding rate was -0.1404% per interval, and that interval is 4 hours, not 8. BTC-USDT on the same venue showed 0.0220% per 8 hours. If you only glance at the percentage, you miss that FLOCK settles six times a day while BTC settles three times.
What the interval actually changes
Funding is a payment between longs and shorts at each settlement. A positive rate means longs pay shorts; a negative rate means shorts pay longs. The payment is the rate times your position notional, charged only if you hold the position at the settlement moment.
On a 4h contract you are exposed to six settlements per 24 hours. On an 8h contract, three. Same rate, double the number of charges. That is the whole trick, and it catches people who copy a rate from one coin to another without checking the interval column.
The cap also differs per contract. FLOCK-USDT listed a funding cap of +/-3% per interval at fetch time, while BTC-USDT listed +/-0.5%. A wide cap on a short clock means the funding line can grow much faster on smaller coins than on the majors.
Worked example: a 2,000 USDT FLOCK short
Say you short 2,000 USDT of FLOCK at 5x, so your margin is 400 USDT. BloFin's Regular tier futures fees are 0.02% maker and 0.06% taker.
- Open with a market order: 2,000 x 0.06% = 1.20 USDT taker fee.
- Hold through the 11:00 AM ET settlement. At -0.1404%, the short pays 2,000 x 0.1404% = 2.808 USDT.
- Close with another market order: about 1.20 USDT more.
Total for that one interval: roughly 5.21 USDT, or about 1.3% of your 400 USDT margin, before any price move at all. Notice that the single funding payment was larger than both taker fees combined.
Now stretch it. If the rate stayed at -0.1404% for a full day (it will not stay fixed, this is only to show the scale), six settlements would cost the short about 16.85 USDT, a little over 4.2% of margin. The same position on an 8h contract at the same rate would pay half that.
What the recent history said
The last ten FLOCK settlements I pulled, going back to Nov 1 at 7 PM ET, were all negative. The six settlements covering the last 24 hours added up to -0.2263%, so a 1,000 USDT long collected about 2.26 USDT and a 1,000 USDT short paid the same. The newest print, -0.1367% at 7:00 AM ET, was far deeper than the -0.0049% before it. Funding on a small coin can jump like that between two settlements, which is why the projected rate matters more than yesterday's average.
For context, other 4h contracts were also deep in negative territory at the same check: COW-USDT at -0.1004% and AXIS-USDT at -0.0784%. On the positive side, QNTX-USDT sat at +0.1468% per 8h, where longs were the ones paying.
Price context for FLOCK at fetch time: last 0.03868, mark 0.03868, index 0.03874, and a 24h range of 0.03619 to 0.04065, about 12.3% from low to high. A range that wide can wipe out funding income in minutes, so funding should never be the only reason for a trade.
Common mistakes
- Reading the rate and ignoring the interval. Always multiply by settlements per day before comparing coins.
- Assuming funding only matters for long holds. On a 4h contract, holding one hour across a settlement costs you the full payment.
- Treating a big negative rate as free money for longs. You collect funding only while price does not run you over, and the rate can flip at the next settlement.
- Comparing BTC-USDT and a small cap using the same mental math. The caps are different by a factor of six here.
Quick FAQ
Do I pay funding if I close before settlement? No. Only positions open at the settlement moment pay or receive.
Does leverage change the funding amount? Funding is on notional, not margin. Higher leverage on the same margin means bigger notional and a bigger payment relative to your margin.
Where do I see the interval? Next to the funding rate and countdown on the contract page. Check it on every coin, not just once.
Is funding a fee BloFin keeps? No, it moves between traders. Trading fees are the part the venue charges.
