[Current events] Say you see XRP at 1.2938 on MEXC this morning, decide the 1.30 area is "support", and open a long at the 300x that the contract header allows. A 0.33% move against you, about 0.0043, is enough to wipe out that margin before fees and maintenance margin. XRP moved more than eight times that much in the last 24 hours.

The image is MEXC's live XRPUSDT perpetual page at about 10:28 AM ET: last 1.2938 (-0.44%), index 1.2939, fair price 1.2938, funding +0.0100% with 1:31:24 left, 24h high 1.3105, 24h low 1.2725, 24h volume 176.516M XRP and 228.202M USDT turnover. The 15 minute chart marks the 1.2725 low from earlier in the session.

What happened

CoinDesk reported XRP fell about 3% to 1.28 during Monday's Asian session as crypto traders de-risked ahead of Wednesday's Fed decision. BTC slipped under 80,000, ETH fell to just above 2,300, SOL barely held 100 and DOGE lost 1-2%. A weekend preview from Crypto.com had XRP pressing 1.30 support after testing it on Thursday. At capture, MEXC's last price was 0.0062 under 1.30, about 0.48%.

The numbers, side by side

  • 24h range on MEXC: 1.2725 to 1.3105, which is 0.0380 or 2.99% of the low
  • Distance from 1.2938 to the 24h low: 0.0213, which is 1.65%
  • Rough 300x long liquidation from 1.2938: 1.2938 x (1 - 1/300) = about 1.2895
  • Leverage at which the rough liquidation equals the 24h low: 1 / 0.0165 = about 61x
  • Funding: +0.0100% per 8h, so 1,000 XRP long (1,293.80 USDT notional) pays about 0.13 USDT per settlement

So any long opened at 1.2938 with more than about 61x would not have survived a repeat of today's low, and the real cutoff is lower once maintenance margin is counted.

The week's calendar, in order

  • Wed Oct 28: Fed decision and Warsh press conference (a hold is widely expected; a December hike is the question). Alphabet and Microsoft report after the close.
  • Thu Oct 29: ECB decision, Amazon earnings
  • Fri Oct 30: BoJ decision; monthly BTC options expiry at 08:00 UTC (4:00 AM ET), roughly 11.7 to 12.2 billion dollars depending on the tracker

Each one is a chance for BTC to move, and XRP has been moving with BTC on the way down.

Fair price, not last price

MEXC shows a fair price next to the index, and that is the price liquidation is checked against. At capture all three were within 0.0001 of each other. On a fast Fed-day wick, last price can spike while fair price lags, so a wick alone may not liquidate you, but a sustained move will.

What the leverage does to margin

Use the 1,000 XRP position, 1,293.80 USDT notional, and look at how much margin each leverage setting asks for:

  • 300x: about 4.31 USDT
  • 61x: about 21.21 USDT
  • 20x: about 64.69 USDT

Now put the 2.99% 24h range next to it. At 20x a full-range move is roughly 60% of the margin (2.99 x 20), which hurts but leaves you in the trade. At 300x the same move is roughly 900% of it, meaning the margin is gone more than eight times over, which is the same 8x comparison from the top.

Common mistakes

  • Calling 1.30 support and sizing as if it will hold. A level is a place traders look, not a guarantee.
  • Choosing the maximum on the slider because it is there. The slider top tells you what the contract allows, not what is sensible.
  • Forgetting that the 61x figure is a ceiling for surviving exactly one repeat of today's low, not a safe number. Using it leaves no room for a wider day.
  • Using last price to judge safety when the fair price decides liquidation.

FAQ Q: Is 61x then a good setting? A: No. It is the upper bound where the rough liquidation equals the 24h low. A sensible setting sits much lower so the stop, not liquidation, ends the trade. Q: What should the stop be based on? A: Where the idea is wrong, for example a level under the 1.2725 low, then size the position so that loss is an amount you chose in advance. Q: Does funding matter for a short hold? A: At +0.0100% per 8h, the long pays and a short receives, about 0.13 USDT per settlement on 1,000 XRP.

Try it yourself: open the XRPUSDT page, read the 24h low, and divide its distance from the current price by the price. Then 1 over that number is the most leverage that would have survived today. Compare that with what you actually use.
