Token unlocks on Bitbase Academy

five checks that tell a real supply shock from a calendar headline, plus the funding tell that shows up 30 days early

By Updated

Key takeaway

Unlock calendars are full of big dollar numbers, and most of them don't matter much. Bitbase Research put out a long piece on how to sort the few that do from the noise, and it's one of the more useful frameworks I've seen on the topic.

The image is the report's own cover from Bitbase Academy (Deep Dive Research). Just the title card, no data on it.

The main point: the date is never the news

Vesting schedules are public months ahead, yet unlocks still get mispriced. A large study the report cites (16,000+ unlock events) found about 90% were followed by negative price pressure, and the weakness usually started around 30 days before the date, not after.

Five quick checks before you care about an unlock

  • Unlock size: tokens unlocked ÷ circulating supply. Under ~2% is usually minor, over ~5% is real pressure, over ~20% is severe dilution
  • Absorption: unlock value ÷ normal daily spot volume. The report flags around 2.4x daily volume as the strain point
  • Who gets the tokens: team unlocks did the most damage in the data, ecosystem unlocks the least, investors and community in between
  • Liquidity: actual order-book depth near price, not the headline volume
  • Positioning: funding, open interest and price action in the 30 days before

Stock vs flow

There are two sizes, not one. The single cliff (stock) and the steady linear drip (flow). Their example: 100M circulating against 1.9B total, with the rest vesting over four years, adds roughly 27% of the current float every year, even if no single unlock looks big.

Why it's the same as an IPO lock-up

Equity research on lock-up expirations found about a −1.5% three-day abnormal return and a lasting ~40% jump in volume, even though the date was public. Tokens just do it with thinner books and 24/7 trading.

The derivatives tell

Holders usually hedge with perps instead of dumping spot. At about 0.02% funding per 8 hours, a two-week hedge costs around 0.84% of notional, which is cheap next to a double-digit drop. So in the T-30 window look for:

  • Funding turning and staying negative
  • Open interest building into the date
  • Perp trading below spot

If a big unlock is coming and none of that is showing up, that's information too. It may not be priced in yet.

What it can't do

The score only measures supply. A strong narrative or new demand can still swamp it, so treat it as a way to rank the calendar, not a price call.
