BloFin NEAR funding after the Binance reopen: NEAR fell 9.5% and longs kept paying
Key takeaway
Why would traders keep paying to stay long on a coin that just dropped more than 9% in a day? That is the odd picture on the NEAR perpetual on BloFin this afternoon, and it ties straight back to the biggest story in crypto right now: Binance reopening withdrawals after the $6.3 billion hack.

What happened this weekend
Binance began phased withdrawals on Sunday. The exchange reported $4.65 billion going out against $1.01 billion coming in, a net outflow of $3.64 billion, and said it has covered around 95% of the stolen funds. The FBI attributed the theft to North Korea's TraderTraitor group.
The derivatives reaction was strange. Crypto futures volume jumped 56% in 24 hours to $111.8 billion, while total open interest barely moved at about $137.1 billion. Liquidations rose 77% to $140.2 million. That is churn: lots of trading, very little new positioning. BTC and ETH open interest sat flat, BNB open interest fell 5.31%, and NEAR led the losers with a 5.93% drop and $3.23 million liquidated, a large number for its size.
What the NEAR perp on BloFin shows
Snapshot from BloFin's public market data at 3:52 PM ET, Nov 2:
- Last price 3.877, mark 3.879, index 3.880
- 24h open 4.285, high 4.351, low 3.846, so the price is down about 9.52% on the rolling day
- Funding +0.0220% per 8 hours, and the recent settlements have printed the same 0.0220% over and over
- Open interest 243,909 contracts, and at 10 NEAR per contract that is 2,439,090 NEAR, or roughly 9.46 million USDT at mark
- Max leverage on the pair is 75x
The key detail is funding. Positive funding means longs pay shorts. The price fell hard, yet longs are still the side paying, and mark (3.879) sits within a tenth of a cent of the index (3.880). Open interest has not collapsed either. Put together, this reads as a market that sold the spot price down while a lot of leveraged longs held on, rather than a crowd rushing to short.
Worked example: why the funding was never the real cost
Take a 1,000 USDT notional long on NEAR-USDT.
- Funding per settlement: 1,000 x 0.00022 = 0.22 USDT.
- Three settlements a day: 0.22 x 3 = 0.66 USDT per day.
- Price move over the rolling day: 1,000 x -9.52% = -95.20 USDT.
The move was about 144 times larger than a full day of funding. Funding is a slow leak. Price is the flood.
Now the leverage side. Suppose someone opened that long at the 24h open of 4.285 with 10x leverage. A 10x position has roughly 10% of margin behind it, minus the maintenance requirement, so the real cushion is a bit under 10%.
- Distance from 4.285 to the 24h low of 3.846: (4.285 - 3.846) / 4.285 = 10.25%.
- That is more than the whole 10% margin, before maintenance is even counted.
- Result: that position would have been liquidated before the low printed, and paying 0.22 USDT funding had nothing to do with it.
At 3x the same move eats about a third of the margin. Uncomfortable, still alive.
Common mistakes on hack-driven days
- Reading positive funding as a bullish signal. It only tells you who pays whom. It says nothing about where price goes next.
- Treating a news-driven selloff on one exchange as isolated. NEAR, RUNE and BNB all moved on the same headline cycle.
- Sizing by margin instead of by notional. 100 USDT at 10x is a 1,000 USDT position, and the market moves the whole 1,000.
- Ignoring the 24h range. A 13% high-to-low range on NEAR today means any leverage above about 7x was living inside the noise.
- Forgetting that liquidation runs on mark price. Mark and last were only 0.002 apart here, but on thin moments that gap can widen.
Quick FAQ
Is flat open interest with high volume good or bad?
Neither. It means positions are changing hands, not being added. Moves on churn can reverse fast because there is no new money committed behind them.
Why is NEAR funding stuck at the same value?
The rate printed 0.0220% at each recent settlement. A repeated value usually means the inputs behind it are stable. The useful signal is the day it changes, not the number itself.
Should I short because longs are paying?
That is a trade idea, not a lesson. The lesson is to check funding, open interest and range before choosing any size.
Checklist before touching NEAR this week: funding sign, open interest trend, 24h range versus your leverage, and liquidation price versus mark.
